Definitely…
WHEN THE WORLD GOES CRAZY
Psalm 2
1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers conspire together against the LORD and his Anointed One:, 3 “Let’s tear off their chains and throw their ropes off of us.” 4 The one enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord ridicules them. 5 Then he speaks to them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath: 6 “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”
7 I will declare the LORD’s decree. He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You will break them with an iron scepter; you will shatter them like pottery.”
10 So now, kings, be wise; receive instruction, you judges of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with reverential awe and rejoice with trembling. 12 Pay homage to the Son or he will be angry and you will perish in your rebellion, for his anger may ignite at any moment. All who take refuge in him are happy.
A few things to know about this Psalm:
1: A ROYAL Psalm
Read at the installation of a new King of Israel (David, Solomon, Etc)
2: One of the most quoted Psalms in the NT
- At Jesus Baptism
- Explanation of the Crucifixion (Acts 4:25-28)
- After Jesus’ Resurrection (Acts 13:33)
- Revelation
This psalm perfectly sets up the tension we still face today: human pride versus divine authority
When the world goes crazy, we know…
1: There is a true king
The Substitute Teacher
- Just a fill in
- No real Authority
- Let you do whatever you wanted
We are Hardwired to make “KINGS”
- Celebrities and Billionaires
We can think that our trouble is because we just “NEED A NEW KING”
But the problem is not that we “JUST NEW TO FIND A NEW KING”
BUT THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE KING
Psalm 2
1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers conspire together against the LORD and his Anointed One…6 “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”
So what does all this mean for us?
That when the world goes crazy and seems out of control, we..
- Know our peace isn’t’ dependent on the News
- Know our financial security rests on the one who promises to provide for his people
- Trust to handle the big problems as we stay faithful in what we can control
- Pray instead of Panic
When the world goes crazy, it’s because
2: We hate the King
Prodigal Son
- I “HATE” the authority of my father
- Give me my independence
- Worked for a moment
- Ended up in a pig pen
Even though we are hardwired to want a King, we want the king we choose
- can say it like this…
What we want is a MASCOT, not a SAVIOR
- A Jesus that supports “MY CAUSE”
But that is just a made-up up cheap substitute
If we can make him into “our image”, then we don’t have to make him KING
- We can choose other “kings”
But that is not an actual option…
As CS Lewis once said…
You must make your choice: either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. ~C.S. Lewis
So how should we Respond?
- By acknowledging the truth…
WE HATE THE TRUE KING…
- Enemies of God…
Romans 5
8 But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 How much more then, since we have now been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from wrath. 10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life.
The lost person can fool themselves by saying, “I have no problem with Jesus…”
The Christian can admit, before He became King of my heart, I first had to realize my heart HATED HIM
- I was God’s enemy, and yet he still saved me…
So what does all this mean?
The Christian can recognize that, while we once hated the true king, he is now the King of our hearts
When the world goes crazy, we must
3: Accept The King
Learning to play an instrument
- The “YOKE” of practice (discipline)
- So many find it to heavy
Yoke = A tool that was placed on cattle to pull farm equipment
- The “HEAVY” thing we carry
But there is often a greater yoke…
- Disappointment
- Dispair
- “I wish my parents MADE ME PRACTICE”
- Really, they couldn’t though
- You had to choose to bear the yoke
Every king/worldview has a yoke
- But only Jesus has given this promise…
Matthew 11:29-30
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
When we submit to His authority, we discover our true potential and purpose
Psalm 2
10 So now, kings, be wise; receive instruction, you judges of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with reverential awe and rejoice with trembling. 12 Pay homage to the Son or he will be angry and you will perish in your rebellion, for his anger may ignite at any moment. All who take refuge in him are happy.
So when the world is going crazy, how does the Christian respond
1: Remember: There is a True King on the throne
- No matter how crazy the world gets, ultimate authority belongs to Jesus
2: Repent: Admit you’ve hated the King
- Don’t pretend you’re fine with his authority; confess your rebellion
3: Respond: Submit to the King today
- Stop fighting his rule and find peace under his leadership
